Bail was yesterday set to the tune of $350,000 for a 34-year-old Diamond, East Bank Demerara resident who was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for an alleged vehicle fraud. It was the first court hearing for Satyanand Persaud who pleaded not guilty when the charge of obtaining money with intent to defraud was read to him by Magistrate Fabayo Azore. The particulars of the charge laid against him detailed that between December 1, 2012 and January 21, 2013 at Forshaw Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he obtained $1.5M by pretending he could sell a motor bike. The Prosecution in this case was represented by Assistant Superintendent of Police, Deneashwar Maindranauth, who offered objections to bail stating that the accused is a flight risk since he had evaded custody since the commission of the alleged offence. However, his claim was refuted by Defence Attorney Kevon Bess who represented the accused. In submitting his bail application, Bess stated that his client was not a flight risk since he had turned himself in.Notwithstanding the Prosecution’s objections, bail was granted and the case stands adjourned to February 28. |
