By Yannason DuncanAlthough I had never heard of Cecile Nobrega prior to writing this article, I feel privileged to have been afforded several pieces of literature and a book of poetry that now gives me a rare and profounder insight into this phenomenal Guyanese woman. My source is a caller from England, John Douglas. When I received that call one Saturday afternoon, Mr. Douglas was more concerned, and anxiously wanted confirmation about an article which I had written and published in the Kaieteur News last July.I still recall having to answer the telephone on three occasions. Mr. Douglas ended the conversation by relating the good news of an exceptional Guyanese, 89-year-old Cecile Nobrega. She had been recognized and honoured in England for her outstanding contribution in the literary field of arts.It was noted quite recently, in October last, at Stock Well, London, that a three-metre statue was unveiled in recognition of Cecile Nobrega’s epic poem ‘The Bronze Woman’. This poem was written by Nobrega 40 years ago in honour and in recognition of the work of black women,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, both in Britain and the Caribbean. The three-metre high monument symbolises a statue depicting a black woman holding a child up to the sky. It is said to be the first ever monument of a black woman to be on public display in England.Nobrega started a campaign since 1995 for a work of art to be created based on the verse. A teacher and a poet, she has won several literary and music awards for her work. She is also a member of the International Alliance of Women. Cecile has travelled the world over to address the concerns of women. Nobrega’s poem, ‘The Bronze Woman,’ reflects her philosophy to womankind and inspired the making of the first ever monument in England to commemorate and celebrate the numerous contributions of women, especially those coming form the Caribbean.Mrs. Nobrega’s name has been listed among Guyana’s greats. At present, Cecile resides in Lambeth, South London. |
