A son is appealing for assistance for his 75- year- old mother who suffered a strokeArshad assists his mother to get off the bedand has been bed ridden for about a year now. Arshad Mc Doom, 34, of Lot 13 Block ‘D’, Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, is hoping that some public awareness of the dire situation they are in can bring some assistance to his mother, Hardai Mc Doom.Mc Doom was a former vendor at the La Penitence Market. She then moved to West Berbice where she took on a job of a stall- holder at the Rosignol Market selling egg- balls, channa and other food items on Saturdays.After moving to West Berbice, they lived with some family elsewhere, until the family told them that they had to find their own house. Her son built the small house in which they currently live, while he was employed with a supermarket in Bush Lot. He left his job to “take care of his mother”.“All the money I worked for, I spent on my mother, so I have nothing right now and there is no better job for persons with disability on the West Coast of Berbice”, he posited.The man’s mother stated, “I asked my (relatives) to assist me but I have to wait months since they are overseas. Some of them are in St James, Barbados”. She said that they are aware of her condition “but I cannot depend on them”. She receives her Old- Age Pension.“I got stroke since one year and seven months (ago) and I am begging the public to give me a little assistance with my doctor bill every month, and my food. My son used to work but he is not working now because he took in sick during Christmas, so he is home caring me. And right now we do not have anything to eat. I live in a little home, no toilet; I cannot sit on the tenny and gotta lie down and put it under me.“I am asking the public for assistance; I have one son”, the woman said breaking down in tears. Her husband died a few years ago and she does not have any relatives in Guyana. “This morning, my son bring a $1000 and said we ‘gonna by a tin of Complan with it’, but I cannot afford that”, she said.The Mc Doom’s homeShe said that she had approached the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana (CIOG) for a new home but “they gave us the turn down”. They also approached Food for the Poor but to no avail. The land, she said, is hers but she would really like a more spacious home.The bedroom begins after the doorway and the woman’s son was sleeping in a bed adjacent to hers.Arshad, since age six, has a hearing problem and requires the permanent use of two hearing aids. Currently, Arshad performs everything for his mother. “I have to carry she downstairs, bathe her”, he noted. He does receive a Public Assistance.“I need the public’s help because when I gotta take her to the doctor, I have to pay taxi, sometimes $20,000”, he noted. Dr Win at the Fort Wellington Hospital treats her once per month.
