Seven schools have benefited from a Food for the Poor (Guyana) Inc Sanitation project which has been executed to the tune of some $9M.The schools include the 8th May Primary,Bojan Bogdanovic Nets Jersey, Essequibo Coast; the Wales Community High School – West Bank Demerara; Plaisance Community High School – East Coast Demerara; St Stanislaus College – Brickdam,Authentic Nicolas Batum Hornets Jersey, Georgetown; Ann’s Grove C.H.S – East Coast Demerara; Golden Grove Secondary School – East Coast Demerara; and St George’s High –Georgetown.At the 8th May Primary School – Dartmouth,Authentic Kemba Walker Hornets Jersey, Essequibo Coast,Michael Jordan USA Jersey, renovation work was carried out at a cost of $1.2 million.The work included the replacement of several toilet facilities,Nicolas Batum Hornets Swingman Jersey, construction of a concrete trestle and the procurement of a 450-gallon water tank, construction of a concrete walkway leading from the school gate to the toilet facilities,Dirk Nowitzki Mavericks Jersey, and restructuring of the water system.Over at the Wales Community High School, two new sanitation blocks were constructed to replace the pit latrines that were being used by some 1350 children. Each block consists of four flush toilets.In addition,Authentic Avery Bradley Celtics Jersey, two water tanks were also purchased and installed. Total cost of that project was $2.2 million.At Plaisance Community High School the girls’ sanitation block was renovated: five new toilet facilities were installed,LeBron James Cavaliers Jersey, the doors were repaired. The roof was also replaced and both the interior and the exterior painted.A new sanitary block was constructed for the boys,Brook Lopez Nets Swingman Jersey, replacing the pit latrines.This new block consists of four flush toilets. Two 450-gallons water tanks were purchased and installed. A concrete walkway was also constructed. Total cost of that project is G$2.2 million.Renovation works were also undertaken at the St Stanislaus College. Several toilets were replaced in the girls’ and boys’ sanitation blocks. The roof of the boys’ sanitation block was replaced and the inside painted. Total cost of project $250,000.Works done at Ann’s Grove Community High were similar to what was done at Wales Community High School. Two sanitation blocks were constructed, each consisting of four flush toilets. Two water tanks were also purchased and installed. Total cost – G$2.3 million dollars.The Golden Grove Secondary benefited from renovation works which include the replacing of all toilet sets in both the girls’ and boys’ sanitation blocks.All the toilets were in a state of disrepair. The interior and exterior of both blocks were painted and a 450-gallon water tank was purchased. Cost – $900,000.Several toilet sets were replaced in both the boys’ and girls’ dormitory at St John’s Secondary. The interior of both blocks were painted. Work was also done on the teachers’ toilet.Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc noted that the projects were undertaken because of the unhygienic learning environment the pit latrines had created at the schools countrywide. |
