The state of infant mortality is currently being reviewed by the Ministry of Health.  However, information coming out of the Ministry is that Guyana has essentially achieved the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) related to infant mortality.According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), reaching the MDG on reducing child mortality will require universal coverage with key effective, affordable interventions: care for newborns and their mothers; infant and young child feeding; vaccines; prevention and case management of pneumonia, diarrhoea and sepsis; malaria control; and prevention and care of HIV/AIDS. In countries with high mortality, these interventions could reduce the number of deaths by more than half, said WHO.And so as part of its effort to maintain the gains made to tackle infant mortality, the Ministry of Health has been paying keen attention to “saving babies.” This is according to Minister of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsaran, who disclosed that “we are now having our review because we are coming to the period of the end of when the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) were to be achieved and we are now heading towards the post 2015 (MDG) agenda or the Sustainable Development Goals.”Moreover, Minister Ramsaran said that particular focus is directed to babies who are deemed small and very vulnerable. “Even untrained persons can see these are difficult cases…previously we would be saving babies way above 500 grams, but now we are saving babies that can fit on the palm of your hands like a little kitten,” said the Health Minister. The vulnerability of some of these babies, according to him, translate to them not even having properly developed lungs. These babies, according to him, should not be out of the protective environment of their mother’s womb, as some might even have cardiac problems and might not be fully developed or even diseased because they are not developed.“Babies like these should still be in the body developing,” said Dr Ramsaran as he theorised “it is like if you have a house and you are building it and suddenly there is a big storm and you haven’t been able to fix the roof or you haven’t been able to fix the windows, it will be damaged if it is thrust into that hostile environment.”For this reason, he said that “we are now, as a service, addressing the needs of neonates those born within the first hours of life to 28 days more and more of those we are addressing.”According to the Minister, previously some of the babies that the public health sector is now able to save might have been classified as stillbirths,Wholesale NFL Jerseys Online, but are now being classified as a neonate who must be rushed to one of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).While these facilities (NICU) are predominantly within the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Dr Ramsaran said, such capacities are also within the West Demerara Regional Hospital, Linden and the New Amsterdam hospitals too.“We have also provided transport incubators, that is, special incubators for these vulnerable neonates. These are not like the regular babies who are coming to use the regular incubators,” said the Minister. With the use of these incubators, the vulnerable babies can be transported from hospitals across the country to the GPHC’s NICU for better treatment. The Minister pointed out too that through overseas strategic partnership, such as the Baby Heart Foundation, the health sector has been able to benefit from other equipment. Some of these pieces of equipment, he noted, are outfitted with monitors and ventilators which are specialised to cater to this subset of the population – the neonates. And there are many other issues such as feeding, said the Minister, of catering to the needs of neonates. Vulnerable babies often require special feeding products which Dr. Ramsaran says, is an exciting enterprise and “I think we have made great strides but it is also very expensive.”And sourcing these special feeds is important, as the Minister noted that their digestive systems are not ready for the metabolism necessary to process regular foods.“Regular foods for premature babies would be dangerous to them. We have done lots for them in Guyana, especially with a neonatal intensive care unit which was pioneered by Dr Narendra Singh and other Guyanese in the Diaspora. We owe them a great debt.”But in order to ensure that the neonatal service remains efficient and effective in the quest to reduce infant mortality, Minister Ramsaran said that many medical personnel, particularly nurses, have been trained to aid the process.
