The Christmas season is one of giving and the members of the Diamond Grove (Formation) Lions Club are doing just that.The group is not yet registered by the International Lions Club due to the fact that it does not have the required membership of 20 or more persons.But that has not stopped the members from being of service to their community.The group has chosen to undertake one of its first projects in the two housing schemes by choosing two single-parent families living in poverty and providing them with some assistance in the form of hampers to see them through the season.But what started out as a seemingly simple task became a little more involved as the group learned more about the two families that they were helping out.In Diamond Housing Scheme, Simone Pompey, and her four children, the youngest an infant of five months, live in appalling conditions.What started as just a move to give the family some extra supplies of food and clothing became something else when the members of the group saw the conditions that the family was living under. They decided that they had to do more and that’s exactly what they are doing.The club hired a carpenter to make windows for the house because it had none and to make a bathroom and toilet as well as execute general repairs. The club members are donating furniture and mattresses because at present the only chairs in Simone’s house are worn and damaged chairs that her husband, who is now in jail, picked up from the dumps.This year the family has lights because the club had the house wired and the windows will have curtains, the walls may be painted and the children will have clothes and food.As President of the Club, Indira Anandjit put it, “they are literally living in four walls”.
