Since independence, in 1966, international law governing the rights of Indigenous Peoples has advanced immeasurably and Guyana, as a member of the international community and in adherence to its treaty obligations under international law, has more than a moral obligation to the first peoples of Guyana, to ensure that the national legal framework meets acceptable standards for the protection of their rights.Since 2006, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) made a number of recommendations to Guyana following the Committee’s consideration of the Initial to the 14th periodic reports of Guyana.
