He noted that while the recipients yesterday were the Suddie and Linden hospitals, last week FFTP reached out to Berbice, and there are plans already apace to similarly support hospitals on the East Bank of Demerara and West Coast Demerara.During the latter part of last year, Giddings said that he and Senior FFTP Manager, Mr. Jimeel Davis, visited the Skeldon Hospital and it was found to be wanting in many areas.“To me it wasn’t a hospital; maybe if you wanted to die you’d go there. We found in the maternity ward patients were sleeping on mattresses that had a lot of cuts and so on…we recognised it needed sprucing up.“The foot care centre there was also not in a very good state. So what we did, we donated tiles and paint to refurbish the foot care centre, and it is now patient-friendly.For the maternity ward we gave them beds and a lot of other items that have helped to transform it…the entire hospital is now transformed with input from Food for the Poor,” Giddings related.Just last week, too, three containers of items were handed over to the Region Six Regional Health Authority, which according to Giddings, can help to further upgrade the health facility. According to the Field Officer, the Regional Health Authority will be tasked with distributing the items as is seen necessary and can even assist other facilities.FFTP has over the years consistently given support to public health facilities across the country. And according to Giddings, “we have containers that are coming that have been specially earmarked for hospitals…we have a lot of bandages and a lot of gauze that are coming from England and they will be distributed to all of the hospitals.”Giddings, who formerly held a position in the public health sector, is the key link between FFTP and the public health sector targeting mainly hospitals and health centres. He is also tasked with public distribution of other items to vulnerable people countrywide. On Saturday he will be spearheading a food distribution exercise that is expected to reach over 600 families at Red Hill, Timehri. Next week, too, he will be facilitating another such exercise in the Rupununi.
