They are being represented by defence counsel Vic Puran.Police prosecutor, Lionel Harvey, told the court that on January 24, last at Camp Groomes on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, the six men had in their possessions components of warheads and aquatic mines without lawful authority.According to police reports, on the day in question ranks from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) were carrying out routine checks when they observed the men loading objects that appeared to be scrap metals from a restricted area into a Canter truck.Upon closer examination the ranks found 54 components of 122mm warheads and two aquatic mines in the said track. The defendants were told of the offence committed, taken to the police station where they were all charged.Vic Puran in his bail application, said that his clients are employed as wood cutters and gold miners and are innocent of the charges instituted against them.Puran added that on the day in question, his clients went to the destroyed army camp to retrieved scrap metals that were marketed to them by a senior official attached to the GDF.The attorney said that the police should have arrested the official who sold the scrap metals to his clients. The lawyer stated that he is “glad” the prosecutor mentioned that the articles found in his client’s truck were components of ammunitions. With that he applied for bail in a reasonable sum. There are no antecedents against his clients and as such, bail should be granted in a reasonable sum.But bail was refused and the six men are scheduled to appear in the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court on February 1. |
