By Jenelle WillabusAlmost thirteen years ago, an organization was birthed out of the need for a facility to treat persons with ‘Dual Diagnosis’,NFL Jerseys Outlet, meaning drug addicts with some sort of mental disorder. This entity was named the Phoenix Recovery Project and it caters to persons struggling with both illicit and legal substance abuse as well as mental conditions. The building in which many afflicted persons have experienced varying degrees of redemptionThe Phoenix Recovery Project was established to complement the sterling work being achieved through the Salvation Army Drug Rehabilitation programme.Mr. Clarence Young, a one-time drug addict himself, was tasked with crafting a programme for Phoenix, since not only is he well-trained, but had firsthand experience with the crippling scourge of substance abuse. The Phoenix Recovery Project is currently located at Mon Repos on the East Coast of Demerara. However, its doors were initially opened on August 1, 2000, at a small building in Hadfield Street,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, Lodge. At that building the Project was only able to house six clients at any one time.Because of the growing demand of the programme, the Project relocated to Sparendaam where the holding capacity doubled. After moving, not only was the holding capacity of the facility expanded, but the content of the programme too.In the initial stages of the project,Carlos Santana Indians Jersey, the main focus was on male substance abusers, this was despite the fact that the staff and Mr. Young had a burning desire to work with women. Finally, in 2007,Justin Upton Tigers Jersey, they had their heart’s desire. The US State Department through the Catholic Relief Services made a grant available to Phoenix for the first ever treatment centre for women.“Over the years the ratio kept growing, there were a lot of women using marijuana, crack cocaine, alcohol and other substances, but yet there was no treatment available for women locally,” Young said.  “Thanks to the input of the US State Department we were able to do what we loved best.”Soon enough training was provided by several international organizations for the staff of Phoenix to deal more professionally in terms of what they had been doing for more than five years. In August 2007, the Phoenix Recovery Project took in its first batch female addicts, much to their delight. For Mr. Young and his staff it was what they had been hoping for since the establishment of the organization.Coordinator of the Phoenix Recovery Project, Clarence Young (left) and Robert Adams, hospital and institution outreach coordinatorOver the years the Project has had its fair share of success stories, pitfalls, and of course, many challenges. Nevertheless, after almost 13 years, its stakeholders still stands committed to not only helping who many consider as ‘junkies’ but also persons suffering from addiction to prescription drugs, alcoholics, and sex addicts on a lesser level.“When it comes to prescription drug abuse we have not had many cases, but we have had enough to know that the problem exists, and what we find is that there is a very lax system when it comes to persons accessing prescription drugs,” Young noted. With its three-phase approach, the Phoenix system has made many addicts “clean”, while, as is expected,Jeff Keppinger White Sox Jersey, there have been several instances of persons having relapses. The first phase is the Residential treatment. During this stage, the clients are required to stay-in at the centre for six to 12 months to undergo primary care, and during this time they participate in group and individual therapy as well as workshops. The clients are made to attend in-house workshops on self-esteem, stress management, communication, human sexuality, assertiveness training and relapse-prevention, among others. Also, from time to time guest speakers are invited to the centre to conduct sessions. There is also an aspect of the treatment which allows clients to “become engaged with their spiritual side”. It must be noted that the centre caters for persons of any ethnic or religious persuasion, as they are allowed to visit their respective houses of worship on a regular basis. In addition, the clients are allowed supporting services, daily exercise, anonymous meetings,Kris Jenkins Villanova Jersey, field trips and occupational therapy skills. As part of therapy, they are also expected to maintain their surroundings, involve themselves in recreational activities and be part of all aspects of community living. After periods of intense care, the clients are expected to return weekly for a 90-minute group session as contact is maintained with individual clients, their relatives and their employer in some cases. Support, when necessary, is offered to their families. The Project essentially caters for the complete rehabilitation of their clients.“There is also a part of the project where we help our clients plan their goals and come up with a plan to even execute their plans, and we also teach them about gradual integration,” Young asserted. From time to time guest speakers are invited to the centre to conduct sessionsHe emphasized that one of the major challenges which clients face is the stigma attached to being an addict or what many refer to as a ‘junkie’, particularly when there are suspicions that the individual may be HIV-positive.“In many cases HIV does not have a face, but everyone knows the junkie from the community and even after treatment when that person returns to their community they are stigmatized and discriminated, and there is very little support from the community. This is quite unfortunate and can negatively impact on the rehab process.”On this note, Young stressed that fighting the scourge of drug addiction is not the responsibility of any one organization but that of a country, a village, a community and society at large.“We have known of instances where persons in the community make large bets on our clients, just waiting to see they have a relapse.”Through it all the Phoenix Recovery Project has remained steadfast in the commitment it made several years ago. Throughout the years, the Project has engaged in several collaborations with other local and foreign organizations to fight for its cause. Some of these include the Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Health and Georgetown Public Hospital Psychiatric Department. Phoenix also provides figures for the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Guyana Drug Information Network.Through its exemplary efforts, the Project was once honoured for its contribution to society in the form of a national award. However, since the grant from the US State Department came to an end, the issue of financing is taking a toll on the services provided. As it is today, the project continues to run on what is garnered from fees paid by clients for their treatment and some generous donations from some members of the corporate society.Young said that given the nature of the disease which they treat, by the time their clients are brought in for treatment they would have already depleted most if not all of their resources and in some cases, those of their family.“So there are times when clients don’t pay fees, or they would pay half. We have many clients who rely heavily on remittances, but that too has dwindled, given the economic downturn worldwide.”Young said the work of his organization is never completed. He spoke of a great void that has been left following the death of Ralph Turpin, who was a key player in the establishment.Turpin was shot and killed in the Stabroek Market while reportedly trying to make peace between two persons. However, before his death, plans were on stream for the establishment of a ‘halfway home’ for recovering drug addicts.Persons completing their treatment would have had a safe place to call home after treatment. The home would have also been a place for involuntary re-migrants to stay and establish themselves upon return to Guyana. With Turpin’s death, that much needed facility was never established leaving a void in the full recovery process for addicts. In the meantime, Young says he and his hard working staff have pledged to remain focused on treating and caring for their clients in the best way they know – through care and support.
