Haynes debating competition has served to highlight the fact that students region-wide are undoubtedly striving to improve their individual performances.At least this is the observation of Coordinator of the annual competition,Dennis Smith Broncos Jersey, Ms Bonita Hunter,Terrell Owens 49ers Jersey, a Senior Education Officer within the Ministry of Education.The finals of the competition,L.C. Greenwood Steelers Jersey, which was staged Wednesday at the National Cultural Centre, saw Aurora Secondary of Region Two triumphing over New Amsterdam Secondary of Region Six.The victory has since raised the question of the debating capabilities of secondary schools within District 11, Georgetown.But according to Hunter, there should be no cause for alarm over the fact that no Georgetown schools were included in the finals.“The competition is performed by individuals and whether a team goes to the finals or not, it does not measure the competence of the participating regions,” Hunter insisted.Hunter said that it is the desire of the Ministry to see the various regions get a chance at winning the title, thus indicating that there is equity in the delivery of education.In 2005, she said, the New Silver City Secondary School in Region Ten was the winner of the competition. The two ensuing years— 2006 and 2007 — Bishops’ High had claimed the title.Hunter noted that she is pleased that another region has been able to cop the title this year following outstanding performances.“I am very pleased with their performance…Each child performed to his or her best and that is the important thing in the competition,” Hunter asserted.The competition started at school level with classes debating each other and then the best of the lot were selected to compete at the regional level.At the regional level,Keyshawn Johnson Jets Jersey, Hunter disclosed that schools debated with each other for the honour of representing their region at the national level where they debated topical issues of national importance.According to Hunter, the competition which is in its 24th year was started by Joseph Oscar Fitzclarence Haynes.“He wanted to develop in our youths a love of debate,Nat Moore Dolphins Jersey, an ability to think critically, an ability to discuss ideas sensibly and with integrity.We are proud to be associated with someone of such impeccable pedigree and calibre and we continue to use him as our patron so that people could find the foundation and the measure to which our students should aspire.”And according to Hunter, this year has produced debaters of the ilk and stature as would have been expected by Haynes.Among the schools that participated in competition at the national level were the West Demerara Secondary,Morten Andersen Saints Jersey, Bartica Secondary, McKenzie High School,Dwight Clark 49ers Jersey, Bygeval Secondary, St Joseph High, Swami Purnananda Secondary,Reggie Wayne Colts Jersey, Aishalton Secondary,Tom Rathman 49ers Jersey, Paramakatoi Secondary, New Amsterdam Secondary, and the ultimate champion, Aurora Secondary.
