Acting President Samuel Hinds yesterday unveiled a ‘Peace Pole’ as Guyana joined some two hundred and sixteen countries in celebrating International Day of Peace.The pole was unveiled at the site of the Non-Aligned Monument in the presence of Minister of Culture Youth and Sports,Drew Bledsoe Patriots Jersey UK, Dr. Frank Anthony,Ty Montgomery Packers Jersey UK, Mayor of Georgetown,Rod Woodson Steelers Jersey UK, Hamilton Green, and members of other peace groups.This year’s International Day of Peace is being celebrated under the theme “Work to overcome barriers, build understanding,Paul Hornung Packers Jersey UK, and promote reconciliation”.Members of the Scouts Association marching along Church Street during the International Day of Peace rally. Following the unveiling of the pole,Le Veon Bell Steelers Jersey UK, acting President Samuel Hinds, Minister Anthony,Brett Favre Packers Jersey UK, Mayor Greene and dozens of other peace ambassadors marched along Main Street bearing placards advocating peace. The march ended at the Kingstown Seawall bandstand. Members of the Scouts Association also played a major part in yesterday’s march. Apart from the peace pole which was unveiled yesterday, another was recently unveiled at the Scout’s Association Headquarters,Louis Lipps Steelers Jersey UK, which is located in Woolford Avenue. Plans are underway for the erecting of more peace poles in other parts of the city and country.The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people”.Twenty years later, the General Assembly set September 21 as the date to observe the occasion annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence… through education and public awareness,LaDarius Gunter Packers Jersey UK, and to cooperate in the establishment of a global ceasefire”.This year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,Artie Burns Steelers Jersey UK, as well as the 60th anniversary of UN peacekeeping.The Day offers an opportunity to spotlight the crucial relationship between peace and human rights, which are increasingly recognized as inseparable. |
