The Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) will be conducting a waste water management training course in Guyana, come Monday. The venue would be the Radisson Suites in Georgetown. The seminar is aimed at sensitising the public to the discharge of large volumes of untreated waste water that pose a serious threat to riverside, coastal and marine environments. This puts the Caribbean and Guyana at risk of losing their livelihoods of people who depend on fisheries, tourisms and other sectors. Guyana depends to a great extent on fishing, hence pollution of its coastal waters from land-based sources is a major concern that requires urgent attention. The course follows other successful courses which were held in Suriname, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.Funding would be provided by the European Union, and the seminar has been organised by the United Nations Environment Programme-Global Programme for Action (UNEP-GPA).The course has received endorsements from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).The seminar is expected to train and equip participants with analytical tools, technical information, and skills for selecting, planning, and financing appropriate and environmentally sound municipal waste water management systems. The course would engage participants in objective-oriented planning, and innovative technological and financial approaches. The workshop would be in keeping with the need for greater focus on sanitation, since effective and adequate sanitation systems are prerequisites for human health. It would also highlight the need for the development of standards which are applicable to different parts of the country, since the disposal of garbage is an issue that is recognised as a national problem that needs to be address. The workshop is being conducted in the year designated as International Year of Sanitation, and it is expected to enhance national capacity in waste water management. It would also bring focus to the need to be mindful of the consequences of inadequate sanitation, especially in the face of global warming and climate change.Polluted waters have implications,Wholesale China Jerseys, not only for ecosystems but also for human health.
