The University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS) and the UWI’s Inter-Campus Guild Council yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve students’ rights, particularly for(From left) President of the UWI St Augustine Campus Guild Makasi Peters, UGSS President Joshua Griffith, UWI Cave Hill Campus Guild President Dalano Da Souza and Jordon Jarrette, Law representative of UWI Cave Hill campus yesterday at the signing of the MoU.disenfranchised Guyanese students studying on UWI campuses. The agreement is expected to be implemented immediately once all of the UWI Guild Presidents assent with their signatures. It will continue to exist indefinitely until a more concrete agreement is established to allow for the protection of students’ rights. The MoU also outlined a need for the parties to work together in developing academic support, through collaborative research and exchange of materials to benefit the students.  Further, it will also address issues of culture and sports in the region.President of the UGSS, Joshua Griffith, who hailed the signing as a “historic event”, said the approach is to work together as student leaders at the various universities to improve how they advocate for the rights of students, student governance, the efficiency in which they work and foster exchange of culture among the partners of the MoU.“As a sub-intent of the MoU we would like to ensure that students from our respective countries who are present at other universities are also respected and protected,” he said.President of the UWI St Augustine Campus Guild, Makasi Peters stated that the partnership was long in the waiting. The agreement came out of the Commonwealth Student Leaders meeting in Barbados in July, where several issues affecting students were discussed.Peters said it was at the meeting that the leaders realized that Guyanese students attending the St. Augustine campus were severely disenfranchised because their government is not a contributing member to the University of the West Indies. He said these students suffer to pay high tuition fees,Wholesale Authentic Jerseys, hall fees and living expenses. He added that he was honoured to meet with Guyana’s education minister Dr Rupert Roopnaraine and discuss these issues. He also noted that he made a proposal to Roopnaraine for the construction of a UWI campus on Guyanese soil.President of the UWI Cave Hill Campus Guild, Dalano Da Souza, stated, “This MoU would go a long way for our students.”The campuses would be able to better aid each other, he said. The agreement is said to be another step toward regional integration.
