For example, since the statement was issued approximately 800 acres of tilled land is left abandoned as the planting of canes is not permitted and allowed.“On January 20, the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) informed GAWU and the National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE) about the soon to come deployment of some workers to Uitvlugt Estate. Already, GuySuCo has moved the ploughing machines/tractors assigned to Wales Estate to Uitvlugt.“These and many other steps are being initiated so that the closure will be fully operationalized by the end of this year (2016).”Chand also noted that what makes the matter urgent is that the decision to close the estate flouts a fundamental and important recommendation of the report coming out of the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the sugar industry. He noted that page 37 of Volume One of the Report says ”the COI does not recommend the closure of any estate at this time”.He noted that the CoI in reflecting on closure of estates at page 30 of Volume One of its report said ”They took into account the current state of the economy which lacks vibrancy, with awareness of the problems in the rice industry,NFL Jerseys Cheap, the low market price of gold and the level of ‘unemployment’”“At page 31 the CoI report said, ”the effect of closing any estate without planning and adequate notice to cane farmers has serious consequences, not only for the employees and private farmers but for the communities as well”.The Opposition member said that the decision can be seen as an act of betrayal by the Government.He added, “GuySuCo advised GAWU at a recent meeting that those workers who will not be absorbed at Uitvlugt will be deployed to some new economic venture which will utilize the cultivation of Wales Estate. When GAWU queried what the new venture is all about what type of operations are envisaged, what are the employment requirements and if GuySuCo be the owner, the Corporation’s representatives could not provide any answer.“Certainly, this does not in any way help to allay the fears of the workers and the communities. I must ask how is it that the Government endorsed such a decision which was devoid of any clear vision and which entails the utilization of the lands and the dislocation of hundreds of employees. The decision is clearly slipshod and hasty, something President Granger promised not to do…”
