President of one of Guyana’s oldest road safety bodies, the Enterprise Road Safety Association, is appealing to minibus drivers not to leave school children stranded on the roads before or after classes.Chandrapaul Persaud, himself a taxi driver, has seen the suffering of schoolchildren who are left on the road hours after classes commence and end, as a result of some bus operators, who blatantly refuse to pick them up.Persaud was speaking last Sunday on the eve of the reopening of school, even as he and other members of his association repainted the pedestrian crossing outside the Enterprise Primary School on the East Coast of Demerara.According to Persaud,Marlon Humphrey Jersey, with the situation as it is, it would be useful for the government to vigorously pursue the re-introduction of “big buses” to cater specifically for schoolchildren.A member of the Enterprise Road Safety Association repaints the pedestrian crossing outside the Enterprise Primary School.“ Sometimes the children will be on the road in Georgetown until seven o’clock in the night, still stranded for transportation. I think if the government brings in the school bus for the children, they will be very happy to use it.
