A delighted livestock farmer was amused and excited to learn that her three-year-old sheep delivered four lambs, one being an ewe.Although some sheep regularly throw large litters of lambs, most produce single or twin lambs.According to the owner, Dawn Daniels, of Vigilance Squatting area,Arizona Diamondbacks Gregor Blanco Jersey, she was greeted by the urgent call of her son, “Come and see the sheep dropping a next one, ah say no it must be the afterbirth, when I come down stairs I see the last one coming out.” The lambs are one week old.The sheep with its one-week old lambs in a separate pen. Being excited she called her husband, “I say ‘Winston, the sheep drop four lamb’, and he say ‘Wow, I never see nothing like that.’”When this newspaper visited the farm, the sheep were healthy in appearance, and the one that was pointed out as entering the world last was actually the largest in size. She said that the sheep that she fondly calls “Brown Girl” has given birth for the second time, and she recalled buying “Brown Girl” with two other sheep two years ago for “50-something thousand dollars” and that they have all given birth.Daniels disclosed that all her female sheep were placed with a special ram to reproduce, and the breed is exceptionally healthy. She revealed that she contacted the Ministry of Agriculture; however, the doctor that deals with livestock is out in the field.Daniels explained she has been rearing pigs, sheep, poultry and ducks for the past 12 years, however, alligators would destroy her ducks when they venture into the canal, and she eventually stopped rearing ducks.According to Research Scientist of NARI, Robin Austin, the Barbados black belly would normally give birth to twins, triplets and quadruplets, since they are genetically inclined to reproduce that amount. He said that a lot of the local sheep are mixed with the black belly which makes them susceptible to genetic breeding. He said that if a person is to also care for their animals and feed them proper supplements, this can also make them very fertile, leading to multiple births. He explained that persons should care for young lambs since there is a high mortality rate. Iodine should be placed on their naval string, since bacteria cling to the string and enter the lamb’s body and later destroys the animal. |
