Two men, one of whom is said to be a police constable, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to answer the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.The men who both pleaded not guilty were brought before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for the hearing. According to the prosecution, on August 31 last, they caused the death of Elaine Harris by driving their vehicles dangerously.On the day of the incident at Smyth and Princes Streets, the number one accused Rodwick McDonald, was said to be the driver of pickup PFF 8888. The number two accused Edward Hopkinson,Cheap NFL Jerseys China, was said to be the driver of pick up PJJ 3478.McDonald was heading east along Princess Street while Hopkinson was heading North along Smyth Street. As they approached the intersection of Smyth and Princes Streets they both failed to stop. The prosecutor told the court that the two vehicles collided with one hitting the pedestrian Elaine Harris who was standing on the road.The court heard that the71 year-old pensioner, of First Street, Alberttown was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.The matter was investigated, the prosecution claimed. The police sought advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) who told them that both men were responsible and therefore they were both charged.The men will return to court on November 25.According to information received, vehicle PJJ 3478 belonged to the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and was being driven by a constable who reportedly did not have permission to drive the vehicle. The officer was later placed on close arrest for the incident. |
