A woman, believed to be mentally challenged, was yesterday placed on self bail, provided that she attends counseling for allegedly mistreating her six-year-old son.The mother, Ashley Barrow, appeared before Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to the charge that stated that she mistreated the child and caused suffering to the child’s health.Barrow resides at Princes and Camp Streets where the police claimed that the woman on February 9, harmed the child to cause him injuries.According to the prosecution, Barrow and the child shared the same home. A report was submitted by the CPA officials and Barrow was arrested and charged for the offence.The court was provided with pictures of the marks on the child’s body and after a look by the prosecution who was obviously upset by the photo, stated that he had no objection to bail but asked that if other children reside in the home they too be examined and if necessary be placed in state custody.The six-year-old was taken away from the mother who was at the time deemed unfit to be the guardian of her son. The boy was placed in care of the defendant’s aunt who resides at Blue berry Hill, Wismar. The matter was put down to February 28.Barrow was granted bail on the grounds that she attends counseling to determine whether she is mentally fit to be the sole guardian of her son.
