Sixty-two years ago, five sugar workers were brutally shot to death at Enmore Estate in Guyana as they were demonstrating for better working conditions, fair wages, and for the recognition of a Trade Union of their choice.According to Mayor Hamilton Green, in 1948 the colonial struggle was at its height. Independence was granted to India the previous year, and in Caribbean and Africa there was the struggle against the system of colonialism and exploitation by the colonial masters.He said Guyana was at the time a colonial country and the major activist representing the colonial powers was bookers and the “sugar plantocracy.”The Mayor said that the call for better conditions existed and people such as Jane Phillips-Gay,NFL Jerseys Cheap China, Cheddi Jagan and others were attempting to get better conditions for the workers.  On June 16, 1948 five sugar workers were shot down and killed during a protest, on instructions from the colonial masters.“That incident was ingrained in our culture and part of our struggle for independence.”Green explained that during the post independence period Forbes Burnham, with a collection of intellectuals and political activists, identified a number of incidents, individuals and people that should be honoured.The Enmore Martyrs happened to be among these. The Mayor said that Burnham looked at the 1763 struggle,Marlon Humphrey Jersey, at the 1828 struggle and others. He identified the slaves who were martyred and killed, whose bodies were placed at the Parade Ground where their heads were cut off and placed on staves. Burnham said that these were among the groups to be honoured and considered martyrs.He added in 1976 it was officially declared that the Enmore incident be remembered and bcame known as the Enmore Martyrs observance. One year later the monument was completed. In 1903 eight workers were killed and seven injured at Friends, and in 1913 at Rose Hall, 15 were killed and 13 wounded. These shootings all occurred on individual estates where workers resorted to strikes and demonstrations in order to force the Sugar Estate owners to improve the working conditions.These incidents were not part of an industry-wide action as was the case of the 1939 shootings at Leonora and the 1948 shootings at Enmore.
