Winston Felix, a truck driver of 14 years faced a causing death charge yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.It is alleged that Felix on November 28, on the Agricola Public Road, drove motor lorry GRR 8669 in a dangerous manner to the public causing the death of Fatimah Jamal.Felix pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charge. He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Rabindra Rooplall who told the court in his bail application that his client is 59 years old and married with children. He also resides at Winsor Forest, Railway Embankment W.C.D, has no previous convictions and has been a driver for 14 years and does not pose as a flight risk because he isn’t a passport holder.Police Prosecutor Dinero Jones objected to bail given the nature, gravity, prevalence and that no address was given to the police. Prosecutor Jones also stated that just because the defendant has no passport doesn’t mean that he won’t flee the country.On the day in question the deceased was on the pedestrian crossing. The defendant admitted to seeing her cross; however, he told police that she looked away from him and he struck her as a result. A post mortem revealed that she died as a result of the accident.Kaieteur News understands that Jamal had just finished her janitorial duties at the Alpha Hotel (opposite Agricola Primary School) and was crossing the road to get home when the accident occurred.According to her daughter, Amani Jamal, her mother was hit by a speeding truck whose driver seemed to have lost control. The victim was rushed to the GPHC by public spirited citizens. The accident was reported at the Ruimveldt Police Station.His representative told the court that at the time, the road was being utilized as a three-lane road and she looked in the wrong direction.Presiding Magistrate Ann McLennan granted the accused $800,000 bail and the matter was adjourned until January 6,Jerseys NFL Wholesale, before Magistrate Delon Best. |
