As Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) continues its Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme (GSIP), the utility company is advising that for the next three (3) months, rehabilitation works and the installation of delivery and force mains will be executed.The streets that works will be carried out include: Louisa Row (between Sussex and Hadfield Streets), Sussex Street (between Louisa Row and John Streets),Nathan Baxter Chelsea Jersey,  Smyth Street (between Sussex and Croal Streets),  Wellington Street (between Croal and Church Streets),  Waterloo Street (between Church and New Market Streets), New Market Street (between Waterloo and Thomas Streets), Thomas Street (between New Market and Middle Streets), Middle Street (between Thomas and East Streets), East Street (between New Market and Middle Streets), New Market Street to junction of Light and Second Streets Alberttown),  Light Street (between Second Street Alberttown to Hadfield Street), Hadfield Street , Cooper Street Albouystown and Regent Street (between New Garden and Light Streets).Rehabilitation works at Pump Station P at Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic and Pump Station W at Princes and High Streets have commenced. Installation works of large diameter HDPE force mains at Louisa Row commenced on August 17.According to Public Relations Officer of GWI, Timothy Austin, customers residing in the aforementioned streets will experience minor traffic diversion, breaking of roads and noise associated with the use of heavy equipment.  The utility is appealing to all customers for their patience and partnership during the execution of the GSIP.  The Programme will result in significantly minimizing sewage overflows and other problems associated with the sanitation system.“GWI expresses gratitude to customers of Georgetown for their continued partnership and apologizes for any inconvenience.  Customers with concerns or questions can contact GWI’s Customer Services Call Centre on 227-8701/03/04 or e-mail [email protected]An agreement was signed between the Government of Guyana and the IDB for the sum of US$10M for the improvement of the operational performance of the Georgetown Sewerage System. This contract was signed on December 8, 2010, based on an agreement that the GOG and the IDB will cooperate in the execution of the Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme.Components of the Programme will include the complete replacement of the 5.5 KM sewerage ring main in Georgetown; replacement of all delivery mains; purchase and installation of additional pumps for the 24 pumping stations to ensure adequate pressure, operational reliability and improvement to the electrical connections. It will also include an assessment and emergency rehabilitation of street sewers in selected areas and purchase of maintenance and operating equipment.
