The Guyana National Stadium now has the capability to hosting day/night cricket matches, thanks to a number of special lights which have been installed and erected.According to Walter Willis, Special Advisor to the Ministry of Public Works, the six specially designed banks of lights were erected by Musco Lighting, a company from Iowa, US, to the tune of US$619,000.Each of the six pylons carry 32 lights of 500 watts each, and will be powered by two generators that came with the deal, Willis said.This latest development will further enhance the prospects of the facility, which since Cricket World Cup, has not been utilized much.   The facility, which boasts a seating capacity of 15,000, a parking space for about 4,000 vehicles, a high security zone, conference hall, club, administrative office, VIP and media centre, and players’ pavilion, was open last year for the 2007 Cricket World Cup.Guyana’s stadium has its genesis in August 2003, when President Bharrat Jagdeo, on his visit to India, held discussions with officials of the Indian Government for support in erecting a stadium.The arrangements secured a US$6M grant and a US$19M soft loan from the Indian Government.In 2004, Guyana won the bid to host CWC 2007 after being awarded the green package that allows a country to host six of the matches of the Super Eight games.Twelve countries had vied for host venue status, but Guyana, Antigua,Trevor Bauer Indians Jersey, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago were selected. Shapoorji Paloonji and Company Limited, from India, was awarded the contract for the construction of the Stadium. Its design was finalised through agreements between the Guyana Local Organising Committee (LOC) and architectural companies from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.
