– trenches avert flooding It was almost chaos at Meten-Meer-Zorg,Kris Jenkins Villanova Jersey, West Coast Demerara, last evening when the sluice door of the main koker broke away during the high tide. When Kaieteur News arrived in the area last evening residents were watching helplessly as there was nothing they could have done to prevent the water from accumulating. However, there was not major flooding as the water was heading towards the backlands via the trenches.Speaking with this newspaper, Uitvlugt Estate Manager, Aaron Dukhia, said that a koker attendant discovered the breakage at about 15:00 hrs yesterday. He noted that no repairs could have been undertaken immediately since the tide was extremely high.According to Dukhia, the door was damaged by the force of the tide, pointing out that there was no indication that the door would have broken away, since it had withstood the rainy season.Dukhia gave assurances that as soon as the water recedes remedial works would be undertaken.A thorough assessment of the damage, he added, will be done today. |
