A 41-year-old shop owner was on Thursday remanded to prison after two counts of human trafficking charges were read to her by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.The court heard allegations that on May 5, Sequila Glywn of Fourth Field, Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, knowingly transported Priya Singh, 26, from Georgetown to 14 Miles, Issano, Essequibo,Ricky Vaughn Indians Jersey, for the purpose of her being exploited in prostitution.It was further alleged that within the period of May 15 to July 7, the defendant engaged in trafficking in persons of a 16-year-old of 14 Miles Arakaka, Region 1, (Barima-Waini) by means of abuse of power for the purpose of exploitation.To both charges the defendant pleaded not guilty.Though the facts of the case were not read in open court, Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue objected to bail considering the nature of the offence, the punishment of the offence and if the defendant is granted this condition, the possibility exists that she may tamper with the victim.Bail for the defendant was subsequently refused and she was remanded to prison. |
