The police responded from Bartica, did very good work… arrested some of them… some of them drowned. We found the boat and we caught three or four of them who are now before the court,” the Commissioner recalled.Of course, he did not forget that much of the success of the police had to do with the support of the public. The Commissioner reminded his ranks that without information their job will be much more difficult.According to Greene, the performance of the Force has been good when statistics are taken into account.“I’m not saying there are no issues, I’m not saying there are no concerns, I’ m not saying that we do not have problems in relation to the police force but I’m saying generally the performance has been good.”In terms of crime, statistics reveal a one percent increase over the same period last year. The Commissioner explained that while there was a high rise in crime earlier this year, there has been a downward trend towards the end of 2011.He boasted that the police have been able to rid the society of many of the criminal gangs that were wreaking havoc.“We have no visible criminal gang that we can talk about. I’m sure you remember the gangs that marauded the country for years…those areas where gangs could have been seen, we managed to have managed to bring those areas under control. There might be drug gangs around but criminal gangs,Cheap NHL Jerseys, we have managed to bring them under control,” Greene boasted.Apart from the support of members of the public, the police intelligence unit has been focusing on criminal gangs.Greene gleefully announced that while robbery under arms has increased this year, the use of firearms to commit these robberies has declined significantly. This he said is a result of increased vigilance by police patrol units which have forced criminal elements to shelve the idea of carrying guns around. The police have so far this year seized 118 illegal firearms, compared to 105 last year. The Traffic Department also came in for praise from the Commissioner.According to statistics, at 110, there is one less road fatality so far for this year when compared with the same period in 2010.“I think the force has been moving on, we have implemented a number of programmes,” he said, pointing to the Integrated Crime Information System, which is mainly operable in A and B Divisions and will soon be introduced on the East Coast of Demerara. It is intended to be part of the entire modernization of the Guyana Police Force.Commissioner Greene did not forget to mention the success the force has had this year with regards to the fight against drug trafficking. He referred to busts at Batavia, Corentyne and Haslington on the East Coast of Demerara. And despite the recent fiasco surrounding the shooting of protestors last week Tuesday, the Commissioner showered praise on the A Division’s administration for the work done before, during and after the recently held general elections.“This work that has been done, we cannot estimate how difficult it is to stand before people and make a decision as to what next. What do we allow… what don’t we allow. You have to use your training to make those decisions,” Greene stated. While some of the ranks were publicly recognized, several hundred others will receive cash incentives in their respective divisions and departments.Awards were also presented to members of community policing groups around the country. |
