A 32-year-old dredge owner was yesterday indicted at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for allegedly firing two shots at one of his former employees.Carl Couchman,Andre Schurrle Dortmund Jersey, a resident of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty when the charge of discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was read to him by Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.The particulars of the charge laid against him detailed that in on December 21, in Georgetown,Gabriel Brazil Jersey, he,Xavier Woods Youth Jersey, with the intent to harm Jared Hamilton,John Obi Mikel Chelsea Jersey, fired two shots at him.Representing the prosecution was Corporal Bharat Mangru who told the court that the victim was once employed by the accused. He related that on the day in question,Cristian Zapata Jersey, the victim spotted his ex-employer in a car with a few other persons and decided to approach him.The prosecution said that Hamilton then inquired about payments owed to him and an argument ensued between the two. He said that the accused then punched the victim to his face who after receiving the blow decided to “run up the road.”Couchman allegedly chased after him and in the process discharged two rounds in his direction. A report was made and the accused was arrested. Subsequent investigations led to him being charged with the offence.Defence Attorney,Dave Concepcion Reds Jersey, George Thomas representing the accused, submitted an application for reasonable bail. He said that his client is a dredge owner who has a business to maintain.The application met with no objections from the prosecution but Mangru put forward an application of his own to the Chief Magistrate. He requested the court to consider offering substantial bail with conditions attached. He asked that if the accused is granted bail, he should be instructed to report to the Station Officer at the Brickdam Police Station.In response,Reuben Foster Youth Jersey, the Chief Magistrate allowed bail in the sum of $150,000 with the condition that Couchman reports forthnightly, starting this Friday. He is expected to return to court on February 7 for the filing of statements. |
