Two meter readers attached to the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated are reportedly experiencing great difficulties in executing their duties and say that the police are making it no easier for them.The men, Seon Case and Antonio Alexis, claim that they have made complaints to both the police and their management about threats to their lives, but to date they are still to see action on the part of either entity.Seon Case alleges that he has been threatened, verbally abused and even had a gun pointed at him and although he has reported these matters to the police, nothing appears to have been done.On two occasions persons have been charged, but by the time Case found out, the matters had already been called up in court and dismissed for want of prosecution.Case says as recent as Monday, his life was threatened by a popular city resident who pulled a gun on him after branding him a thief.According to Case, he was reading meters in the South Ruimveldt area when he went to the Blue Sackie Drive home of the resident and using his GPL identification card, he identified himself as a meter reader.He was allowed into the yard and proceeded to read the meter while the resident stood about 10 feet away.Case was using one of the hand-held computerized meter reading sets and was getting no reading from the man’s meter. So he requested the man to produce an old electricity bill to help him rectify the problem. The man left him and went into his house to get the bill.But by that time, Case had rectified the problem and did not need to see the bill after all.“He came back out and when I told him that I no longer required the bill, he became abusive and told me that I was making an ass out of him. He then grabbed me and said, ‘Come boy, you look like a thief.’ he pulled out a gun and pointed it at me and then slammed me against a car,” the meter reader told this newspaper.He said that persons were passing at the same time and the man let go of him and he subsequently went to the East La Penitence Police Station where he reported the matter.Up to yesterday, Case was still to hear from the police.However, this newspaper was informed that the resident was arrested by the police but was released on bail on the direct instructions of the Divisional Commander.Case told this newspaper that he had almost similar experiences late last year while operating on the Lower East Coast of Demerara.In November, he was carrying out work in the Annandale area when he went into a yard after identifying himself as a meter reader.No sooner had he entered the yard, two men came from the back and menacingly demanded to know what he was doing there. He again produced his identification card but the men paid it no mind.“One of them said, ‘you looking for a good lickin’,” Case recalled them saying.He became afraid and hurriedly left the yard and headed to the Vigilance Police Station where the matter was reported.According to Case, one of the men was arrested by the police but there appeared to be some reluctance on the part of the lawmen, since they told him to return the following day to give a statement.He said what surprised him was the fact that the man offered him money to settle the matter in the presence of the police, including an officer.But the two incidents were not the end of his story.On another occasion late last year, Case was operating in Vryheid’s Lust when a man began looking at him suspiciously.“At the time I was standing in front of a restaurant and this man came up and said to me, ‘they send you de wrong place’,” Case recalled. On that occasion he reported the matter directly to the Commander of the Division, Assistant Commissioner Gavin Primo who caused the man to be arrested and charged.However, the matter was called several times without his (Case’s)knowledge and was subsequently dismissed last Thursday.Meanwhile, in the case of Alexis, he believes that since the person who threatened him is a senior official at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, the police are not inclined to take action.In fact the policeman, an Inspector, who was looking into the matter reportedly asked Alexis, “How you gun want I arrest a big, big man like (name given)?”On October 12 last year, Alexis went to the official’s home in Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara to read his meter.“I did not go into his yard, I was on the parapet reading his meter.
