The move comes in anticipation of the arrival of new sewerage pumps, which according to Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Public Relations Officer, Timothy Austin, is scheduled for next month.According to Austin, GWI has secured the services of S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Constructing Services for the rehabilitation of the city’s 24 sewerage pump stations.Through excavation intended to reach the sewerage stations below, workmen were seen engaged in activities yesterday in their quest to clear the chambers. The project, Austin said is aimed at improving the quality of the sanitation service in Georgetown.Among the areas that the contractor has already commenced work are High and Princes Streets, and Winter Place and Hadfield Street in Georgetown. The preparatory works commenced last week and according to Austin, are likely to conclude within the next four weeks.During a recent interview with this newspaper,Wholesale Nike NFL Jerseys, Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, disclosed that GWI is faced with the challenge of managing critical sewage chambers in the city. The Minister had then stressed the urgency for the arrival of the more than 20 submersible pumps for the upgrade of the sewerage system.Challenges in the sewerage system, Ali said, have been overwhelming in the Tiger Bay area, particularly in the vicinity of the Municipal Abattoir. As a result, he noted that constant clearing and cleaning of that area is essential in order to ease the situation of congestion in the sewerage system.“We have had a lot of problems with these areas…In fact we have a few critical chambers around the city that we are constantly clearing and cleaning…” GWI officials, as a result, are constantly monitoring the system even as efforts are made to enforce the law as it relates to restaurants and other similar businesses’ use of grease traps, Ali asserted.The overall system, he said is however bolstered with the upgrade of the Tucville Sewerage System. Further, he noted that through education programmes, intensified efforts are being made to raise awareness on how citizens could help to preserve the sewerage system.As a result, the Minister had since last month disclosed that a contract was awarded, and works on 21 pumping stations was ready to commence.“We already had the coordinated group meetings with the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company and other service providers to inform them about the plan of action, the project description and so on. So by the end of the year we are looking to have at least five of the stations rehabilitated and if the pumps are here, we could have those five stations connected…”The Minister is therefore optimistic that the entire rehabilitation of the sewerage system will be completed by March next year.And while the investment will be put into effect this year, the Minister had cautioned previously that “this would not be the solution for the sewerage system in Georgetown.”He explained that the project will simply provide a platform or a window of opportunity of about three to five years in which a holistic plan to address the complete rehabilitation of the system could be derived.“We have already prepared a Terms of Reference for a holistic plan for the sewerage system in Georgetown and that will be done next year through consultancy,” Minister Ali had highlighted.And to aid that intended project, the minister disclosed that already some health indicators have been identified which will be the basis for a study to improve the system.And according to the Minister, the University of Guyana would be awarded a contract to conduct the study to draw the correlation between the health indicators and the sewerage system.
