Hundreds of students,Howard Wilson Womens Jersey, who attend the St. Joseph High School, on Wednesday,Ryan Vogelsong Jersey, celebrated their annual “Cultural Explosion 2011” as part of their “Culture Week” that aims to expose children to the various cultures while enlightening them about the history and contributions of the diverse races in Guyana.According to Marlyn Davis, a teacher of the St. Joseph High School, her school began its observance of “Culture Week” on Monday,Jonathan Allen Redskins Jersey, with students participating in a cook-out competition,Doug Flutie Chargers Jersey, and song competitions in which participants had to sing National Songs and more.Under the theme ‘Showcasing our cultural diversity; recognising People of African Descent”, a number of students, on Wednesday, researched well-known persons from various ethnic groups in the performing arts area, and they educated the audience about the importance of the people and their contributions.There was also an exhibition where the public was allowed to view a wide range of cultural items at booths and tables that were set out in the school compound.Chetram George, a Fourth form science student, told Kaieteur News that such an activity supports the idea of “One people, One Nation, One Destiny”. He explained that it was a very exciting event where persons were afforded the opportunity of being educated about various cultures and what the country has to offer.Dachelle Watson, another Fourth form science student,Cam Robinson Womens Jersey, said, “It was very informative and since it is the International Year of African Descent, we could have placed more emphasis publicly and learn more about the African people”.When this publication spoke with Kristal Abrams, a Fourth former in the Arts stream, she stated that the effort was one which was educational and students were lucky enough to be learning about the cultural diversities which Guyana has. This would help in passing down information and tradition as they get older and start their families.Dhanesh Prashad, a fourth year Business student agreed,Derek Barnett Youth Jersey, with his classmates and added, “It was such an exciting programme,Sandy Koufax Jersey, one that will help kids appreciate, understand and learn more about the various cultures and assist them academically.” |
