It was a solemn atmosphere at the Sandy’s Funeral Home yesterday when close family members, friends and curious individuals gathered to take their final glimpse of Luan Rodney and her baby daughter. The 28-year-old woman died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) last week Tuesday where she had gone to deliver her second child. However, complications, including a ruptured uterus resulted in both mother and child not surviving. Reports are that the baby was stillborn.Dressed in a tiny white dress lined with blue lace, the baby appeared sleeping as she lay on top of her mother who was laid out in a sky blue dress and black shoes.Several could be heard lamenting about how the two passed away. “Is negligence…is nothing but negligence carry this girl and she baby,” cried one woman as she offered condolences.Following a funeral service both mother and child were laid to rest at Le Repentir cemetery. The recent maternal death at the hospital which prompted an almost instantaneous investigation attracted much attention in the media with the husband of the deceased woman, Nigel Rodney, calling for truthful answers. He was yesterday desperately trying to fight back tears as he lifted his four-year-old daughter, Marsha, so that she could peer into the casket bearing the remains of her mother and sister.According to the widower yesterday he is still waiting to get answers from the hospital as to how medical officials at the hospital were unable to, at least save, his wife.Rodney after requesting a meeting with doctors at the facility was told how desperate measures were taken to save her life. It was disclosed that not only was his wife losing a great deal of blood and required a blood transfusion but she was unconscious throughout the entire process. She was pronounced dead at 07:50 hours last Tuesday.Although doctors were unable to confirm reports that Rodney’s wife was bleeding ahead of being rushed to the delivery room, a patient on the maternity ward had disclosed that not only was the now dead woman groaning hours after a pill was inserted into her to induce labour but she was not attended to by nurses until after she started bleeding.Post Mortem examinations conducted on both mother and child last week Wednesday were inconclusive. The attending Pathologist disclosed that samples were taken for further examination. “I don’t know who will examine the samples or where exactly they are taking the samples but the doctor said that it will take about 10 days before they can say anything more,” the man told this publication.Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran in a subsequent interview with this publication revealed that it was not unlikely that the pill used to induce labour was the highly controversial Cytotec pill. There are reports that the pill has had many damning side-effects including uterine rupture and amniotic fluid embolism, which can lead to death.According to the Minister although the drug is a legitimate one it is imperative that patients,Joe Crede White Sox Jersey, to whom it is administered, are closely monitored. “Cytotec is a good drug to induce labour…it is in protocol now and it is one that is being used more and more for such activities…but once you induce labour by whatever method patients must be monitored,” asserted the Minister. He said that “disappointing” is a mild word for what happened to this patient…It is painful that this has happened especially in our main tertiary hospital,” he added. |
