As part of its continued effort to address the psychosocial needs of the society, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is poised to train another batch of officers who will lend their skills to a programme already in effect.This is according to Director of the Human Services Ministry Child Protection Agency, Ms Ann Greene.She said that the Human Services Ministry with the collaboration of the Ministries of Education and Health, has been trying to ensure that citizens, particularly children, are equipped with the coping ability to deal with traumatic experiences.And the programme, which was kicked into being last year, has been yielding considerable results according to Ms Greene. She said that children exposed to traumatic experiences such as deadly assaults, domestic violence, accidents and other distressing ordeals have shown signs of progress with the help of officers attached to the programme.The Human Service Ministry had also touted the implementation of a Wellness Centre. But according to Minister Priya Manickchand, the Ministry has been vigilant in offering its service even before such a proposal was made.She added that before any collaborative effort, the Ministry had gone ahead rendering its service to both children and adults alike.Nonetheless, Greene related that the Ministry has in place its child care and protection centre, adding that both the Ministries of Health and Education have similar facilities.The ongoing initiative, which has seen a number of Social and Welfare Officers within the collaborating Ministries trained to render the psychosocial service, will be a sustained one although there is no expectation that traumatic events will occur on a regular basis, Greene noted.She disclosed that the Human Services Ministry is about to recruit a number of Social and Child Protection Officers who will also be trained for the Ministry’s expanded psychosocial programme.The programme was engaged initially with a view to making the society one which offers psychosocial and crisis support to students.
