A defective motorcycle parked under a dilapidated building burst into flames yesterday, but the prompt response of a fire tender within the vicinity saved the house which had caught fire as a result of the explosion. The building located at 231 South Road,Wholesale Jerseys, Bourda, is situated next to a vulcanizing and mechanic shop where the motorcycle was dropped off by a policeman. Other motorcycles that were parked under the house occupied by a senior citizen were also destroyed.Reports disclosed that the patrolling policeman encountered mechanical problems with the motorcycle and subsequently visited the vulcanizing shop where it was then parked under the house. It later exploded under the old, wooden building, which members of the Guyana Fire Service were able to save from being consumed. No one was injured since the lone occupant of the building was not at home at the time.Firefighters came in for loud praises by citizens for extinguishing the fire before it could have spread.According to Fire Chief Marlon Gentle, the Fire Service received a call at 10:54 and within minutes a fire tender was dispatched to the scene. He said operatives were able to extinguish the fire without any damage to surrounding buildings. |
