Soviet-trained political scientist and economist Donald Ramotar was unanimously selected to lead the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in this year’s general elections.Ramotar, 60,Cheap NFL Jerseys, was born months after the party was founded in January, 1951.Donald RamotarThe three other candidates, Ralph Ramkarran, Clement Rohee and Gail Teixeira all withdrew from the contest to choose the nominee and committed themselves to working for another PPP victory this year.Ramotar is popular with the working class which has traditionally supported the PPP, having served in one of the highest positions at the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union. The party’s Central Committee members had met at the party’s Robb’s Street, headquarters (Freedom House) earlier today to elect the most suitable candidate and decided on a secret ballot to chose the best candidate. But no voting was needed after the other candidates withdrew.Ramotar had only required just nine votes to secure the nod of the Central Executive Committee to secure the chair of the presidential candidate. Had the voting process taken place it would have been the first time in the history of the 61-year-old party that it would have been voting to select a presidential candidate. Founder Cheddi Jagan has always run as the presidential candidate. When he died, his widow, Janet Jagan ran unopposed for the Presidency in 1997.When she became ill and resigned as Head of State, the party selected Bharrat Jagdeo as the President, and he went on to lead the party to victory at the polls in 2001 and 2006. |
