The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has yet again found itself in a position where it is need of staff to work on Election Day.Significantly, GECOM has indicated that the shortage exists in key areas, including Georgetown.Local Government Elections (LGE) are set to be held on March 18, for the first time in over two decades. A large percent of the voting population never voted in LGE.With less than two months remaining to that date, GECOM is looking to have all vacancies filled for Elections Day staff within the next few weeks. This is to ensure that there is enough time for adequate training in the lead-up to the elections.Despite the fact that more workers are needed, GECOM has already begun training.Keith Lowenfield told media operatives on Monday that the shortfall is somewhat major.“At this point, we continue to have a shortfall in the numbers, specifically in Georgetown and for the nine NDCs on the East Coast and in Region Two and Region Six.”Lowenfield said that GECOM has been seeking to get persons from within the municipalities and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils to apply for the Presiding Officer and Assistant Presiding officer and other senior jobs.He explained, “We are saying that if we are talking about Rose Hall, we want people from that municipality to be engaged, as against going to Fyrish or Port Mourant or Tain,NFL Jerseys China Cheap, and so that is the thrust and as far as practicable, we have not satisfied that guideline as provided by the Commission”.Lowenfield said that Georgetown’s shortfall is most severe. However, he noted that history indicates that there will be increase in applications as E-Day draws nearer.Based on this precedent, Lowenfield as well as GECOM Chairman, Steve Surujbally said they are confident that the vacancies will be filled and the elections process will proceed without any issues. |
