Ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday halted an illegal horse racingPolice confront one of the horse cart operators.event outside the Square of the Revolution, Georgetown. Of the almost 60 men who were present, police arrested only four while the others scattered.An eyewitness recounted that between 11:30 and noon several persons gathered at the 1763 Monument in anticipation of a horse-cart race, which reportedly carried a $500,000 prize. Soon after, several ranks appeared and interrupted the event.Some men tried desperately to reason with the police ranks to allow the race to proceed but their efforts failed. In the end, other officers were called in as reinforcement and the crowd quickly disintegrated.The eyewitness further stated that horse-cart racing is a regular occurrence in the area, and involves large sums of money. The races are randomly organized to evade police attention.
