The main opposition party, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), is recommending the convening of a local “Think Tank” to study the implications of the global financial crisis and make recommendations to assist vulnerable groups. The party is suggesting that the “Think Tank” be comprised of all relevant stakeholders in society. The PNCR has expressed concern for pensioners in particular,Wholesale Jerseys China, noting that the pension of $6,300 is totally inadequate. The party, on Friday, said that it hopes that the interventions of the pensioners themselves in the letter columns of the newspapers will soften the hard heart of the Bharrat Jagdeo Administration and persuade it to do something about the pensions paid “to so many people who have served Guyana long and well.”However, Keith Scott, a member of the party’s executive, said the Government must go beyond bringing relief to the pensioners and generally do something for the really poor and vulnerable. He said the public assistance paid out is a scandal and needs to be urgently revised, given the rising cost of living. The party is continuing to press its case for the reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 16 percent to eight percent.According to the PNCR, the current financial and economic crisis will only cause further pain to the poor and vulnerable in our society.“The Party calls again upon the Jagdeo Administration to take urgent measures to enable vulnerable Guyanese to be cushioned against the devastating impact of the present economic environment and the coming economic storms,” Scott stated. |
