Preparations for the International Building Expo II are well underway and the much hyped exhibition looks to be bigger and better than last year.At a press conference yesterday afternoon on the National Stadium tarmac between two exhibits that were already being constructed, Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali gave an update on the Expo. Not to mention everything else that comes in between.This year, the Minister revealed, there will be 105 booths, 15 of which are representing foreign- based businesses and products. He noted that the Ministry recently had to close the registration for booths since it had exceeded the space available for the event.He said that Building Expo was a success story that saw the emergence of a lot of new businesses and new markets for many of the existing businesses. Ali cited the many orders that flooded into the country after the last Expo calling for Panel Doors and other wood products, saying that the Expo generated significant interest in the foreign construction markets as well.The Minister noted that there was a trade delegation here at the last Expo and this year will be no different with the Ministry expecting the presence of a “huge, high profile delegation” from Trinidad and Tobago which according to Ali will most likely be led by the Trinidadian Minister of Trade.He said that there are also indications of at least two Trinidadian companies looking to operate and invest in Guyana, one in the business of PVC pipe manufacture and distribution and the other in the energy and housing sector. Developments like these he pointed out are leading to the possibility of a Trinidad-Guyana business summit which may further the opportunities to maximize the business and trade opportunities between the two countries.Although Ali did not share the size of the bill that the Government is footing for carrying off such an exhibition, he did comment on the personal investment made by each of the booth owners pointing out that a conservative estimate of the costs incurred by a booth holder is somewhere around $2M while some companies spend even more, noting that there were at least four companies planning to build life size model homes.President of the Guyana Manufacturers and Services Association (GMSA) Clinton Williams, noted that the GMSA is pleased to be a part of Building Expo II but he called on the exhibitors to bring something new to the stage.  He said that there needed to be more innovation and creativity on the part of manufacturers and service providers.The entire building process from the procurement of materials through the workmanship to the building and finishing of a construction project should be orchestrated to realize a house of minimum cost and maximum benefit.He also noted that there needs to be room in the exhibition for the research institutions such as the University of Guyana and skills training institutes. He pointed out that the Expo was born out of the recognition of the fact that the building and construction sector has experienced an explosion over the last few years and there is a real need to maximize the opportunities in the area by bringing the providers together with the consumers in the sector.
