While Mathematics may not be a “Love-at-first-sight” experience for some students, teachers of the subject at various Secondary Schools across the country are determined to improve student performance at the next sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations by using more effective teaching strategies. As the first week of school ended on Friday last, teachers have told this publication that they have already started implementing new teaching strategies. One Mathematics teacher from a junior high school noted, “Often we take for granted that a student is supposed to know the basics which would have been taught at the primary level and even in First and Second Form. But I strongly advocate a revision course before starting the Fifth Form Mathematics syllabus. I have never done it before, but this year, after evaluating the individual performances of my students, who recently wrote Math, most of them, this round, earned either a Grade 4 or 5 and that is not satisfactory. It invariably reflects upon my ability to teach. This year, I insisted that each student write on a piece of paper, all the topics that they have problems with and I plan to examine each topic carefully in this coming week.”He added, “It is time that we understand how important it is to tend to the cracks in the foundation.”Another teacher at one of the leading High Schools stated, “While being in this profession for about 32 years,Cheap China Jerseys Authentic, most of my students have always done well but it is time to pay attention to those that are not doing well. We should not give students the impression that, if they get a grade 4 or 5 it’s fine. More importantly, I have heard students complain that they can’t stand the way a teacher approaches a subject. Some have even said that the teacher makes him or her feel as though they are simply dumb and doomed to failure if they don’t get the grasp of a topic from the first explanation.”“The perception a student has of a subject lies within our hands and we must not take this for granted. It can affect the relationship the student has with the teacher as well. So it is our responsibility to ensure first of all that we have created a comfort zone in the classroom. We must also bear in mind that not every child learns the same way and especially in this subject area, I cannot begin to stress how important it is to be armed with numerous approaches in teaching a topic. Mathematics is without a doubt fun, but when a student tells you that the subject reminds them of eating bricks, it is something to pay attention to.”The teacher said, “It is for this very reason I plan to focus this year on a one-on-one approach. I plan to devote more of my time to those students who have a difficulty with certain topics by talking to them privately and teaching them separately. Students will also be rewarded for voicing their concerns, especially as it relates to not understanding any aspect of a topic that is being taught to them.”A Private School teacher of the fifth form level opined that, “A strategy that I plan to use is what I refer to as becoming the student. After teaching a topic, the very next session, I plan to ask most of my students, if not all, to teach me what they have learnt from the last lesson. I believe giving the student the chalk and asking them to explain along the way will help you to identify step-by-step where the faults are.”In addition, “Making the subject as relatable as possible has proven to be very successful,” expressed a retired Mathematics teacher who has taught at Queens College and St. Joseph’s High School. He explained that some teachers of the subject area can be very, “robotic.”  He said that, “Most teachers make the mistake of sounding like a voice recorded text book.”“The subject should as often as possible be related to everyday life.  It makes a huge difference. Ease the autocratic approach and converse with your students. Change the dynamics of your classroom. Being a music teacher as well, I have found a very tactful way of incorporating relationship issues and popular hip hop and dancehall music into my approaches so as to help students remember some basic theories. Believe it or not, it works like a charm. We must also empower each student by letting them understand that they have the potential to be extremely proficient in the area if they practice.”The educators also suggested that the Minister of Education include in her programme for Education Month, a seminar aimed at providing information on how to teach the subject area more effectively.
