The trial of the duo implicated in the mob killing of Enterprise East Coast Demerara, businessman, Kumar Mohabir, on Republic Day, 2013 began at the Georgetown High Court, yesterday.The Deceased: Kumar MohabirMohabir, called “Duksy” and “Fire Link” of Lot 7 Fernandes Street, Enterprise, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was attacked and brutally stabbed by a group of men on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown on February 23, 2013.The man, who operated a tent rental business out of his home, was attacked after he went to the location to collect a tent which he rented to his neighbours for the Mashramani celebrations — his attackers were reportedly intoxicated and armed with broken bottles. Following police investigations, Devon Thomas and Randy Isaac were charged jointly for the murder.Yesterday, the two men appeared before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed 12-member jury. They pleaded not guilty in answer to the murder charge. Attorneys- at-Law Latchmie Rahamat and Peter Hugh are appearing on their behalf.State Prosecutors, Stacy Goodings and Diana Kaulesar, are presenting the case in which some seven witnesses are expected to testify. Following a brief opening presentation by Prosecutor Goodings, three witnesses were called to the stand. The first witness was the victim’s uncle, Bheenchand Mohabir.He said that on February 23, 2013 his injured nephew was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC) for treatment but he subsequently died. The witness said that two days later, he went to the said hospital where he witnessed a post mortem examination. However, the witness maintained that this could not be, since his nephew was still alive on February 20, 2013.Police Constable Shawn Roberts was next to take the stand. He testified that he was on duty at the Alberttown Police Station, when he received information relative to a report of an alleged stabbing which took place in the vicinity of Vlissengen Road. The policeman said that he visited the crime scene and interviewed several persons there.  He also noted that there were spots of what appeared to be blood on the western side of the road.Roberts said that he subsequently went to Woodlands Hospital, where he met and interviewed relatives of the victim. The officer said that he also visited the injured man. He said that he observed a motionless Mohabir lying on the hospital bed; he had a wound at the back of his head, on his upper thigh and his right side chest.Constable Roberts told the court he also witnessed the post mortem examination, which was conducted by Dr Nehaul Singh.Roberts noted that following the examination it was recorded that the victim died as a result of the multiple stab wounds he sustained.Roberts was also questioned by the defence. Under cross-examination, the officer told the court that he could not say whether samples of what appeared to be blood were collected from the crime scene to be tested since he was not assigned to do so.  He however, noted that there were other crime scene ranks present at the scene.Assistant Supertindant of Police (ASP), Lueovick Scotland, recounted that he had interviewed Thomas at Alberttown Police Station after he was detained for the alleged murder.  The detective told the court, however, that the accused denied having any knowledge of the alleged crime.   Officer Scotland said that during the interview he noticed a wound above Thomas’s left eye and further questioned him.He told the court that the man instead claimed that he was nowhere near the crime scene on Mash night; he was attacked and robbed by three bandits the same night while at Ogle, ECD.
