BETSY GROUND, EAST CANJE – In the wake of the killing of wanted man,Cheap Jerseys China, 40-year-old David McPherson, called ‘Colonel’, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, a resident of the same village is fearful for his life.Fifty-eight-year old businessman, Maurice Sookraj, also of Betsy Ground, who was robbed at gun point about 07:30 hours on Monday of cash and other articles, categorically denied that the ‘Colonel’ was one of his attackers.“I can’t say it is him when I did not see him at my home. He is not one of the bandits who robbed me. The two men in my shop who robbed me were ‘Black Boy’ and a next fellow from Nickerie, Suriname.”David McPherson called ‘Colonel’ was fatally shot about 22:00 hours on Tuesday during a confrontation with police ranks at home in Betsy Ground. It is alleged that the outlaw drew a cutlass at ranks as they tried to detain him. An arrest warrant had been issued for the man and recently he was sentenced in his absence to a five-year jail term.He was charged with robbery under arms, was wanted for questioning in connection with several robberies and was also suspected to be the leader of a gang wreaking havoc in the East Canje area.A sawn-off 12 gauge shot gun, 18 cartridges, two toque masks with eye holes, a Rambo knife, a crow bar, a computer monitor and a keyboard were allegedly found at the home he stayed at Betsy Ground. Also found were three pounds of what is suspected to be cannabis sativa.Some of the items are believed to be those stolen from Maurice Sookraj.On the day of the robbery, the ‘Colonel’ successfully managed to escape a police dragnet. Kaieteur News understands that in some sections of Betsy Ground persons are of the view that the killing of the criminal is a racial one.Meanwhile, Mr. Sookraj is calling for more police presence in the community since he claims his attackers are still at large and are considered dangerous.Mr. Sookraj asked, “Why do I keep selling? It’s like I am selling to mind these people. Imagine I haven’t yet cleared off debts from my first robbery which was a very big snatch. The money they took was also to pay off debts.”According to the businessman, that was the fourth time his business concern – M&J Sookraj General Store — was robbed in a four-year period, On the second occasion his firearm was stolen.According to him, last month he visited the Central Police Station to enquire about the status of his application for a new firearm and was told that the document was sent to the Reliance Police Station for the ranks there to provide up-to-date information.“I am still waiting. Three weeks ago I called Reliance Police Station and told them I received a tip off that someone was planning to rob me.”Mr. Sookraj noted that his report was investigated and ranks visited his premises the very night but nothing materialized.He said that several other times neighbours alerted him that intruders were on his premises but they would escape. |
