“You have the clear responsibility to foster unity among diverse populations and create a vision for a common future that pivots on the acceptance of differences with a view to harvesting the strengths that are inherent in diverse societies.”This was a statement made by Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ali at a recent visit to residents of Mabaruma and Port Kaituma, Region One.  She charged the citizens to work alongside Government and to put aside political differences in an effort to transform the country. She stated that despite political persuasions, citizens must unite in an effort to develop their region as there can only be development if there is cohesion and co-operation.Ali stated that  Government is currently engaging citizens at the community level in conversations to foster national unity.“These principles serve as the touchstones of our social cohesion work-plan and are aimed at fostering greater cohesion within diverse communities and national unity between them and across the country,” said Ali.She stated that the ideal level of cohesion within the country cannot be made possible by Government alone, and charged the audience with the responsibility to embrace differences as Guyana is a diverse society.“We recognize that behavioral change is a pillar of reconciliation in this country, and we must all contribute to achieving the good life that we all want right here in Guyana.”Several issues regarding the state of the region were raised by residents at the meeting, and Ali promised to look into these matters.
