This was due to additional problems the crew encountered with the tank, shaft and propeller of Kimbia‘s system.“What happens with the Kimbia is because of its age. Every time workers repair one part of the vessel, they discover another fraction that needs immediate redress to secure the seaworthiness of the ferry. We want to ensure that the boat is in proper working condition before it returns to service in the North West.”There has been a series of delays as it relates to the release of MV Kimbia. Several months ago, the vessel moored for repairs at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) dockyard. GNIC and the Transport and Harbours Department entered into an agreement on November 5, 2012 for the docking of the boat at a contract sum of $118M.The boat subsequently became a source of contention between the Transport and Harbours Department (T&HD) and the Engineering Company, over a demand for a notable sum of money.The money, represented payment of variation costs, which amounted to $79 million for unapproved work done to the vessel (work which, GNIC argued was deemed critical to secure the seaworthiness of the boat). TH&D was willing to approve only $10.8 million worth of the variation but later agreed to $25 million worth of the payment for repairs done to the most ‘critical’ parts of the vessel. At that stage, the issues between GNIC and TH&D were reportedly ventilated.However, this newspaper was reliably informed that GNIC’s portion of work is still incomplete. At the conclusion of GNIC’s repair to the vessel, an additional $20 million of the variation cost will be paid to the company.Ms Merchant explained that GNIC is finalizing their portion of repairs while TH&D workers are addressing their fraction of the repairs.The General Manager revealed that TH&D maintenance crew is working to rectify all of the necessary problems with the Kimbia, which includes “minor welding” to the main structure.
