Canadian High Commissioner, David Devine, on Wednesday handed over two cheques totalingFrom right to left- Canadian High Commissioner, David Devine, presenting the cheque to Helen Browman of the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospitalalmost $3M to Help and Shelter and the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital.According to Devine, the Help and Shelter received $1,731,000 to be used in the work to reduce domestic and sexual violence and child abuse.“This handing over today is a significant and tangible expression of Canada’s commitment to supporting social development that has a direct positive impact on women and children… We have been supporting Help and Shelter for some time now, and we are happy to do so once again, as we are conscious of the good job that the entity is doing to combat the horrible effects of the scourge of domestic and gender-based violence against women,” said the Canadian High Commissioner.Activities under this would include the provision of free face-to-face and hotline counseling, advisory counseling and referral services and the delivery of free court support services to victims/survivors of domestic and sexual violence and child abuse.This will also cater for the advocacy for advances in implementation for the National Domestic Violence Policy.In 2009, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided $7,628,850 in support of a project to expand the organization’s counseling services to rural areas.Meanwhile, the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital benefitted from a cheque valued at $1,153,000, towards the purchasing of one neonatal, Infant Pediatric Ventilator complete with standard accessories, which will be housed in the renovated north wing of the hospital.From left to right- Representatives of Help and Shelter, Canadian High Commissioner, David Devine,China Jerseys, and staff of the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital on Wednesday.The Guyana Christian Charities and St. Joseph Hospital also made contributions towards the cost of the items. “You will all recall the devastating fire that occurred in May, 2010 that partially destroyed the hospital. Also, the great effort by the hospital administration to very quickly and temporarily restore services for the patients is very commendable. And now, I am happy to be able to contribute to the placement of a pediatric ventilator and accessories.  As you accept this gift from the government and people of Canada, I encourage the hospital administration to really care and maintain the facilities that will be procured.”Devine stated that the funding was provided from The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) for specific projects that are being undertaken by these two non-governmental organizations (NGOs).Denise Dias, Chairperson of the Help and Shelter, and Helen Browman of the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, both received the cheques on behalf of the organizations.
