He describes himself as belligerent, free-spirited, energetic and outspoken. We can vouch for belligerent, in the sense of him being aggressive. Dominic Weekes knows what he wants, and it’s not in some Econs’ class. Well, maybe later. We can also vouch for him being outspoken, in the sense that he knows exactly what he wants and he knows just how to convince you that he does. And if he is in a room and he wants your attention, he knows just how to get it.And he packs some good looks too; too bad the camera doesn’t bring that out.The guy is ready for a shot at his dream and he counts on sprinkles of publicity in the local media to help him along the way. And we’re happy to oblige. Dominic grew up in Georgetown as part of an extended family – mother, grandmother, grandfather, cousins and uncles – and leads a fairly comfortable life.Growing up, he was transferred from one primary school to another, “since the other was becoming uncompetitive.”No surprise, he landed a place at Queen’s College in 2003 and continued through sixth form, chalking up some good grades on his way out in 2008.“The priceless lessons I learnt while at that institution are irreplaceable and I see aspects of life everyday where they can be applied,” he says. But foremost of his days at Queen’s College were the friendships he was able to form.He says there was an “uncanny” ability to work relentlessly while displaying “a true appreciation for entertainment.”Dominic is not your fly-by teenager looking to do some stupid music because he is struggling to find his way. He really does want to study Economics; an overseas university application is in.So you might think he is a nice, brilliant chap throwing his life away. But he bounces off any such talk with ease. It’s almost like he knows that is what you’re thinking.Local musicians haven’t been known to make it big, save for the legendary Eddy Grant. And those who have tried stepping out haven’t got that far. Dominic doesn’t want to be put in that bracket, and he hates the stereotype that goes with a young person trying to break out in music.“If I need to see other Guyanese succeeding and earning millions from music before I develop a passion for it, then I shouldn’t be doing it in the first place.”Dominic doesn’t talk in the air. He is sure that he wants a career in music.“I know it’s going to be tough but ‘easy come, easy go’ they say. And I want it forever.”And so he will be looking to put in the work and hope the blessings flow.“So, I’m going to put it on the line and work and hope God answers my prayers and makes my dreams possible.“I’m all about doing what no one has done before. Usain (Bolt) wouldn’t have gotten glory if any other man had run 9.6 in a race. I don’t want be an average Joe.”And no matter how much it is soaked in cliché, Dominic believes his music relates to our everyday life and we can identify with it.“The endless purposes music can serve to an individual is really something that never ceases to amaze me.”He compares writing a song to sitting in a therapist’s couch, letting out “WHATEVER” you feel.“I believe that a good artist’s music should be like an audio version of their diary.“Without a shred of doubt I think music’s most outstanding purpose is its therapeutic ability, both to listener and performer.”But wait, what music? He hopes to get that out. He has done two mix tapes; one that shows the direction he wants to go is called “Intellectual Warfare.”   He is fond of hip-hop, and he insists on “true” hip-hop and everything about it. He has learned influences from Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nas, Common and Lupe Fiasco to develop his own style of music.“I plan to do true hip-hop for as long as I live; undiluted hip-hop is what I want to do.”We say he has done two mix tapes, but to him, he has done two and a half, and his explanation shows his determination to be a serious artiste.“I say two and a half because I was planning on releasing one called ‘The Liberal Doctrine of Man’ but I decided to squash it because it was not sounding quite like what I was hearing in my mind.”He sold almost a hundred copies of “Intellectual Warfare” through word of mouth and marketing on the corridors of Queen’s College. His new mix tape is called “The White Knight Soliloquy” through which he has tried to measure his own growth.  “The thing which I like the most about it is that I’ve shown a tonne of growth, maturity and a great deal of honesty.”Dominic acknowledges that he is beginning to take shape and find himself as an artiste, and even if he knows the direction he wants to go, that is not the end of it all.“I don’t ever want to get comfortable,” he says, “so even as I listen to this new CD, I’ll listen to it and find a way to improve and come better on my next effort.”So, with promise,Cheap MLB Jerseys, listen out for Dominic Weekes.
