The other bullet, fired from a smaller calibre weapon, struck his left shoulder, causing minimal damage.The news of the charge was not taken too well by the two ranks in question, who have a total of 30 years service.They both were wounded in the line of duty, having faced death on separate occasions during the dreaded crime wave of 2002 to 2008, while they were stationed on East Coast Demerara.Cruickshank received 17 pellet wounds from a shotgun fired at close range when his patrol unit was ambushed by gunmen at Coldingen in May 2002. One of his colleagues was killed during that attack. Constable Cruickshank sustained a partially paralysed right hand.In 2005 Constable Jones was wounded when gunmen in Buxton opened fire on his patrol unit.“I have served the Guyana Police Force for so many years without a charge and was never promoted; this is the thanks I get,” said Jones, who maintained that he was just protecting himself and his colleague from a violent mentally ill man.He reminded that last year he was responsible for the apprehension of a murder suspect who had been on the run for 10 years.He stated that he is willing to face the court to prove that he did not act in a reckless manner.“I feel it because a man lost his life but if we could have done anything better we would have,” Jones stated.
