Director of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC), Professor Daizal R. Samad has dispelled notions from some persons whom he referred to as “visionless”, “habitually opposition”, and “very insecure” who have accused him of running a one- man show at UGBC. “I know I’m accused of things like that. They will see a noble thing and still oppose it. One- man show, my foot!” he said.He said that people who are intellectually inhibited usually replace analysis with gossip. The Director said that a lot of jealousy is being directed towards UGBC because the campus has become porous to the community and has been forging a significant partnership with the community.He stated that the Berbice Campus, in the past, has had a negative image in the country and that the face of the campus at this time has been transformed. He said that it took him a year to change “the terrible reputation” of UGBC.“When I came here [to UGBC], this place was a mess. This place was losing money hand over fist. The place had a stinky reputation. You could smell it. It was a smell where there was altercation, physical and otherwise; cussing down and ‘busing’ down; breaking down of doors and locks and apparently nobody was answerable to anybody”, he said.Prof. Samad referred to his campus as the people’s campus. “This campus is the people’s campus; this campus is the real campus, because we are doing all the right things”, he said.“Tain and Johns [Campuses] have an osmotic relationship with the community. He alluded to the different activities which the campus is taking part in such as training police recruits in various fields, including Information Technology.“For the first time in the history of this country, we have IT literate policemen and women on the roads and in our communities. It’s never happened before. It’s still not happening in Demerara.
