The sponsors for the Regional Agriculture Forum believe that the venture will lead to future successful investment not only in Guyana but also in the region. This is according to Country Manager for Scotia Bank, Amanda St. Aubyn.Scotia and Republic Banks were the official sponsors for the Agriculture Forum which concluded on Saturday last. St. Aubyn added that her company had no hesitation to be part of the event since it this will lead to support later.“We were happy to be part of the event. Investment is something that we appreciate…not only for this country but regionally,” the bank’s country manager said.Yesterday, representatives from both banks handed over their sponsorship cheques to the CARICOM Secretariat.Speaking to the media during a brief ceremony, Desiree Field-Ridley, Adviser on Single Market at the CARICOM Secretariat, said that without the support of the banks the event would not have been hosted successfully.“Funds were committed to the event before the forum. The event was surely a success and this is be highlighted later down the road. The event was not for immediate investment but for future investment,” Field-Ridley said. With some 150 participants, Guyana hosted the event on June 6 and 7 last. The Forum was held against the background of the rising cost of food on the one hand, and,Cheap NFL Jerseys, on the other, the Region’s efforts at addressing the decline in investment in agriculture, one of the key binding constraints in the Jagdeo Initiative. At the conclusion of the event on Saturday, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, announced that President Bharrat Jagdeo will be approaching financial institutions on the possibility of establishing a special financing window for small states, explicitly recognizing the characteristics related to size, the nature of the island and vulnerability. The President, who is responsible for Agriculture in the region, will be making the representation on behalf of the private sector in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) shortly. The private/public sector mechanism, Persaud had said, should be an ongoing feature and report at least bi-annually to the CARICOM Head responsible for Agriculture. |
