She explained that the CNO and Nurses Associations all have the mandate to target areas that they know people are complaining about and seek to address same.“However, on the other hand, I do know for a fact that nurses really do their best and try really hard and sometimes they are really under-appreciated. Sometimes the people that you know you would have done your best for…the kind of response you get it can make you upset; it can get to you as a human being.”Additionally, Martin-Charles observed that the population on a global scale is becoming more demanding than it has ever been. She explained that a number of the simple care procedures which were readily availed within the home by relatives are now being sought at health facilities, thereby creating a greater burden on the system.“The things that used to be normally handled in the homes are no longer being addressed there. Apart from the different services that are provided by health facilities, the roles of nurses are constantly expanding. So of course if you went to a health facility in the past where there was one clinic, now they may have five or six with the same staffing.”According to the CNO Director “nurses could be so stretched that at times it can affect how they relate to people.” However, she cautioned that not because nurses might be pressured they can assume a disrespectful stance towards patients and attend to them in a manner than is less than kind and unaccommodating.“…No matter what you go through, I try to tell nurses that what you have to remember is that the people who get the brunt of your dissatisfaction are not the ones who are causing your discomfort. When a patient comes to you they don’t know how you have been treated, they don’t know the needs that you have that have not been met; but although they don’t know they are the ones that you end up being harsh with.”Martin-Charles asserted that patients can never be seen as the ones responsible for a nurse’s attitude, regardless of what that nurse may have gone through while performing her duty. “You have to step back and try to smile even if inside you want to cry and still say ‘Sir or Ma’am’ can I help you?”According to Martin-Charles, often times the public equate the service rendered at their local health facility with what is seen on television or what they read. “They expect a lot and when they don’t get it sometimes they are dissatisfied, but still I believe most nurses work very hard and they do their best.”She nonetheless admitted that there are some nurses who from time to time need to be reprimanded because they are not performing optimally. At the same time, she asserted that patients need to understand the kind of pressure nurses are under and give them “a little leeway when they react out of the norm.”
