Why are our kids not reading? Are there not enough books? Is the National Library being proactive enough to encourage reading? How about parents taking a little more interest? All hands will have to be on deck.I saw one critic talking about teachers practicing students on exam papers without paying too much attention in actually teaching them.What is the game plan? Are we better off than 25 years ago?How do we deal with the rise of the private schools which many of our experienced teachers have gone to?One cannot see a scenario where the private schools will go away, as many parents who can afford it will prefer the more personal attention that are coming from these.What is it that they are doing different? What is the cost of changing the system? Can we afford not to?The hinterland is also an area that my heart bleeds for. Access to books and learning tools are common problems. I think for years now, because of a lack of understanding of the difficulties facing the hinterland, coupled with a lack of resources, as least so the former administration say, scant attention has been paid to these areas.Are our subjects and curricula really geared to prepare students for the workplace? Do we need more technical institutes?I would be the first to say I don’t know the answers.
